The summer of 2025 has introduced a critical issue to India's skies. Birds—nature's singers and pollinators—are dropping dead in their thousands. Why is it so? A lethal combination of intense heat and a general Bird Flu Alert is killing birds. As the heat increases, so do the fatalities, reminding us that climate and health issues are interconnected dangers.

Bird Flu Alert: A Disease Made Worse by the Heat

With May 2025 approaching, bird flu infections are increasing at a very fast pace. India's Bird Flu Alert has become serious with new cases being reported today from Uttar Pradesh, where poultry farms and wild birds are facing grave problems.

H5N1 virus is spreading rapidly and is infecting domestic birds as well as wild birds. 

There is a Bird Flu Alert in very hot climates, making birds more vulnerable. Birds are not receiving sufficient water, thus dehydrated and unable to resist infections, and they are perishing in large numbers.

This summer, the temperature has crossed 45°C in northern Indiaa. Birds, unlike human beings, do not have sweat glands. They need to cool themselves by flapping their wings and panting. Without pure water, trees being felled, and hot concrete everywhere, they are indeed suffering from the heat.

Most birds are dying in mid-air, dropping from branches, or dying on rooftops. It's not heat alone—the Bird Flu Alert is exacerbated, weakening their immunity even more.

The Vitan Earth Foundation says that if not addressed immediately, this unique combination of disease and weather can harm biodiversity for decades.

Bird flu may seem like it only affects animals, but it can be dangerous because it can spread to other species. Yess, people have sometimes gotten bird flu, and with global warming, the chances of new changes happening are increasing.

Besides, birds are key pollinators, pest controllers, and sources of food chain stability. Their extinction impacts agriculture, forests, and water bodies. The Bird Flu Alert is not a one-time incident—it's an ecological signal of alarm due to climate change.

Real Time Crisis: UP Bird Flu Case 

Until 21 May 2025, sudden bird deaths have been reported in certain enclaves of Uttar Pradesh—typically in backyard chicken farms and in the vicinity of wetland habitats through which migratory birds fly. Deaths have caused mass testing, culling of infected birds, and the establishment of containment zones as per the new Bird Flu Alert guidelines of health and animal welfare departments.

The Vitan Earth Foundation is working in coordination with local rescue groups and the authorities to set up quick response teams for dead bird handling, sanitization, and public education.

Be a Home Hero: What You Can Do for Birds Today

You don't have to be a scientist or a wildlife rescuer to do yyour part. Anyone can assist in saving birds from this hard summer and assist in supplementing efforts during the Bird Flu Alert. Here are easy ways you can do your part:

 1. Offer Water Bowls

Have shallow, clean water bowls on your balcony, rooftop, or garden. Birds always need water in this heat. Change daily. Add a few pebbles for them to stand on.

 2. Develop Shade Spots

Put potted plants or fabric covers in open areas to give birds some shade. A green corner can be a very important place for them.

3. Bird-Friendly Feed

Offer safe grains such as rice or bajra in small trays. Avoid processed or salted foods. Clean the feeders to prevent the spread of infections during the Bird Flu Alert.

 4. Avoid Handling Sick or Dead Birds

Call animal rescue services or the police if you spot a dead or injured bird. Don't touch it directly as it can carry the H5N1 virus. If you need to relocate it, use gloves, and wash your hands afterwards.

5. Refill and clean the Birdbaths and feeders

Clean and disinfect feeders or bowls daily to prevent viral transmission, particularly in the case of a Bird Flu Alert.
